Gardening in TeKakano

We looked at the garden patch outside our classroom and decided we would like to plant it ourselves!

Ruby brought some sunflower seeds to school.

"They might grow up to be this big!" said Ruby.

We had to think about our garden;

Tall plants, short plants.

What do plants need to grow?

We know they need "dirt", water and sun.

Will there be enough sun??

How will we know how much water??

We looked at plants and decided what we would like to grow.

Then we planned our plantings

Tall plants need to be at the back.
Planting the sunflower seeds. Thank you Ruby.

Jordey and Luca prepared the rest of the garden.

"Does this look soft enough Mrs H?"

Our runner beans will grow up here.

Jake helped too
Mrs Irvine gave us these strawberry plants

And some cucumber plants

Elsie is checking the strawberry plants roots are covered with soil.
Everybody is helping.

"Cress plants are short Mrs Hawkie. I can plant them here!"

Making Dough

Last week we made dough for our classes.

We looked on the internet for our recipe and then we checked that we had all the ingredients.

We needed;

2 1/2 cups of flour

1 cup of salt

2 tablespoons of oil

1 tablespoon of cream of tartar

2 cups of boiling water!

We had to measure carefully..... and we did!

Our Great Mathematicians

We have been learning about the different resources we have to help us investigate mathematics concepts and support our learning goals. We enjoyed working in small groups and exploring the different games and equipment we have. As you can see, we had lots of fun!

Reading to Self

Today we introduced  reading to self to the children.  Every day the children choose some books that they are interested in from anywhere in the classroom and then find a comfortable place to settle down and read.  Reading to self might include reading the pictures, reading the words or retelling the story.  We read to self every day to build up our stamina.
Today some children chose an atlas, picture books, Hadley's book he made about his hoilday in Australia, and home reader books to read. What amazing readers we have in Te Kakano!
